Quick and Easy Holiday Desserts Quick and easy holiday desserts are just what you want on the menu when you are trying to relax and enjoy yourself. But wait - holidays are a time when you are most likely to be entertaining so although you don't want to be cooking anything too complicated you still want to be able to impress your family and friends.
I am Scottish so the first event on our calendar is Burns Night
when we celebrate the life of the poet Robert Burns. We often do this with cranachan, followed by a little whisky, of course. Cranachan is a light delicious dessert made of raspberries and cream.
Valentine and Easter Day -quick and easy holiday dessertsValentines Day is next and we have just the thing to put your partner in the mood: melted chocolate strawberries! How could anyone resist a simple strawberry covered in chocolate, mmm! There is little skill needed for this recipe other than to be able to melt chocolate. Heaven!
Easter is a time for family, friends and celebration so why not try something a little different away from all that chocolate and make a banana cake for dessert. A banana cake with a little ice cream or/and cream is a very tasty treat that everyone will enjoy. If you prefer to be a little more exciting, then try a pineapple upside down cake accompanied with custard. My mouth is watering at the thought!
Summer - quick and easy holiday dessertsWhen the children are on holiday it can be exhausting trying to keep them amused and out of mischief. Let them help you cook. I haven't come across a child yet that doesn't like to be elbow deep in flour. As well as keeping them amused it's educational. Allow young children to weigh and mix the ingredients out so they are involved. Although it's not advisable to allow any child to cook alone, with a little supervision they should be allowed to get on with baking themselves. A strawberry trifle or a summer pudding are ideal as there is little cooking in these recipes.
Thanksgiving and Christmas - quick and easy holiday dessertsThanksgiving wouldn't be the same without the traditional pumpkin pie. Our pumpkin pie is made with ginger and cinnamon giving it an extra zing. Serve hot with cream - what more could you want!
Perhaps you want to get away from the usual pumpkin pie, then why not try making your own cheesecake. The store-bought ones are not a patch on a homemade cheesecake
Nowadays at Christmas anything goes. Although the traditional plum pudding is still very popular there are some other quick and easy holiday desserts such as trifle, cheesecake, cranachan, carrot cake, plum pudding, blueberry pie, peach cobbler, or apple pie. Our family usually has Christmas pudding where a small dent is made in the top where rum is poured into it. The lights are switched off and the rum is set alight with a match. The fire of the rum lights the room up for a few seconds before going out. It never fails to amuse me!
