For the best grilled asparagus recipe you need to buy yourself a grill pan. Not only will it cook the perfect grilled asparagus but it will give you healthier meals as no oil is needed. If you haven't got a pan grill then you can use an ordinary grill.

Mrs Beaton had a grilled asparagus recipe in her cookbooks, actually I think she had about 14 recipes altogether on asparagus. They were a much loved vegetable in the Victorian age even though it was considered a luxury. Today it is still treated as a luxury vegetable as the cost will show.

The colours of the plant vary from green white or purple. We normally eat the green variety. In the UK it is best to buy between April and June.

Buying asparagus

Before you buy your asparagus check that they look fresh and the tips are tightly furled. If they look wilted or are scarred they are past their best.

Prepare asparagus

Wash the vegetable in cold water. The ends of the asparagus are hard and woody so it's best to cut them off.

Ingredients

  • 6 spears of asparagus per person
To serve
  • Serve with: a little olive oil or butter
  • salt, to taste
Method

Heat your grill pan so that it's very hot.
Place your asparagus onto the grill and allow it to brown underneath.
Turn the vegetable over and brown the other side.
Turn out onto a dish and serve with butter and a sprinkle of salt.

To make your grilled asparagus even tastier, you could try melting about a quarter cup of butter with a sprinkle of powdered garlic. Drizzle over the grilled asparagus.
