This is the best banana cake with chocolate icing that I have ever tasted.

The recipe comes from my sister who is a great cook. In addition she is a good organiser so she is usually in charge of the family get together when not only the cooking has to be the best that homemade food has to offer, but the plates have to be warmed while the food is served hot. I always think its quite an art to entertain for more than one or two people and my sister certainly has this ability.

My sister introduced me to the best banana cake one afternoon at a family birthday get-together where she served it as a dessert accompanied with pouring cream. If you have a sweet tooth you are just going to love this recipe. The chocolate icing on the top really adds something. It can be eaten on its own, no butter required. as it will just melt in your mouth.


Keep an eye on this cake while it is baking as it can occasionally burn at the edges. If this happens follow the instructions and pull the baking paper up a little.


Use old bananas which nobody wants to eat, you know the ones which look a bit black and unappetizing. You need never waste another banana again. Mash them in a cup to a pulp until they look a little like something with which you could feed a baby.

Oven Temp

Heat your oven first so the temperature is the required heat when you are ready to put your best banana cake into it.

Best Banana Cake

  • 190g plain flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 155g caster sugar
  • 2 tablespoon golden syrup
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 pint milk
  • 1/4 pint vegetable oil
  • 2 medium mashed bananas (ripe bananas are best)
First heat the oven - 170C.

Method for best banana cake:

1. Grease and line a bread loaf tin with baking paper.
2. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, bicarbonate, baking powder together.
3. Add syrup, sugar, eggs, milk and veg. oil.
4. Mix together well using a hand mixer.
5. Mash the bananas to a pulp before adding to the mixer.
6. Give one last whisk with the hand mixer.
7. Pour into tin.
8. Place in centre of oven 170C for 35 - 45 min.

Burning may occur round the edges : if this happens pull the baking paper up at the sides. This helps prevent further burning. After cooking time, take your cake out and leave to cool for a few minutes before turning out onto a mesh tray. Allow the cake to cool before spreading the chocolate icing on the top.

Chocolate icing

  • 56g melted butter
  • 2 tablespoon milk
  • 225g icing sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa

Using a hand whisk, mix all the ingredients together and spread the chocolate icing over the top of the cooked and cooled banana cake. If you prefer a runnier icing, then add an extra teaspoon of milk to the icing.
